Job Summary

CHP’s General Counsel oversees and manages the provision of legal services to the institution to ensure maximum protection of its legal rights and to maintain its operations within the limits prescribed by law. Assists and supports officers, board members, and other upper management in carrying out the mission of the institution.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensures CHP complies with applicable laws and regulations
  • Establishes and maintains internal legal processes, advises on legal/compliance matters, and participates in the development of strategies related to risk mitigation
  • Advises the executive team and board of the best course of legal action as situations arise or reach the potential to occur
  • Drafts, negotiates, and examines agreements, such as strategic partnership opportunities, vendor contracts and supplier agreements.
  • Crafts and/or reviews legal strategy in response to any litigation
  • Advises on legal implications or procedures for business development initiatives and strategy planning
  • Supports employment practices including drafting of contracts, sale and lease agreements, as well as providing guidance on employee relations policies and procedures
  • · Reviews, researches, interprets, and prepares both written and oral opinions on a wide variety of legal issues
  • · Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliation to keep abreast of latest developments in laws affecting CHP and in other related areas
  • · Leads company and departmental training on relevant legal topics and risk mitigation strategies
  • · Manages and coordinates outside council needed for the organization
  • · Participates in the development of strategies and/or messaging related to issues with the potential for high media interest

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to develop and implement legal strategies and solutions.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret issues and to prepare legal opinions.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with CHP Employees at all levels.
  • Ability to research and interpret applicable laws.
  • Ability to provide competent legal advice and counsel to senior officials on a wide range of legal/policy issues.
  • Ability to prepare and manage departmental budget.
  • Knowledge of the judicial system and procedures.
  • Knowledge of institutional policies and procedures and general governance matters.
  • Negotiating skills.
  • Expert level legal knowledge and experience with a working knowledge of the federal and state laws applicable to 501©(3) organizations, affordable housing, and personnel matters.
  • Knowledge of current and developing legal issues and trends in laws affecting the business and related areas.
  • Exceptional judgment and ability to act decisively and with discretion in situations requiring quick but thorough analysis and decision-making.
  • Ability to evaluate risk and resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
  • Thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and able to turn work around quickly as needed.

Education and/or Experience

  • BSc Law or Juris doctorate.
  • Post-secondary study in Business or an MBA considered a strong asset
  • 5-10 years of corporate law experience
  • Management experience preferred

  • Physical strength to manipulate light to medium weight materials regular basis.

  • Work is conducted in a typical office environment with temperature control and natural and artificial light.
  • Must have small motor dexterity to type quickly and accurately, use customary administrative equipment (adding machine, computer, laptop, phone, etc)
  • Must have close and distance vision and the ability to adjust focus to perform assigned tasks.
  • Must have hearing acuity to listen/hear questions or requests from internal customers and the ability to verbally convey complex information.

Safety

The employee shall adhere to the policies outlined in the CHP Employee Handbook, which may be updated at any time. Employee shall adhere to OSHA safety standards and established company safety protocols and utilize any safety equipment prescribed for particular operations. The employee should not assume that the company or supervisor is aware of potential safety hazards, and the employee has a duty to report any environmental hazards or if a health or safety concern arises.
