General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer

Rutland, VT – WittKieffer has been retained by Rutland Regional Medical Center to assist in their recruitment efforts for a General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer. This is an extraordinary opportunity to join a high performing, independent, community-centered hospital. The General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer is responsible for providing legal advice and developing and leading processes to ensure that the organization complies with the law, achieves its strategic goals and serves its charitable mission. The position is responsible for leading the organization’s compliance program and the Compliance and Legal Services Department; educating and advising the Board, Leadership and staff on laws, regulations, and ethical standards related to the organization’s operations, and individual legal matters and compliance issues; and managing legal services performed by outside counsel and overseeing compliance and legal issues within the organization with a particular emphasis on fraud and abuse, regulatory compliance, privacy and security, contracts and grants, and organizational policies and procedures. The incumbent serves as an active part of senior leadership and will be the primary compliance and legal authority and advisor to the organization.

Reporting directly to Rutland Regional Medical Center's President & CEO, Claudio Fort, the General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer (GC & CCO) will serve as a strategic business partner dedicated to managing legal and compliance services as well as reducing potential risk and exposure to the external regulatory and legal environment. The GC & CCO will play a critical role in proactively developing and optimizing relationships throughout the organization, continuing to maintaining a culture that actively seeks legal and compliance input to further optimize RRMC's day-to-day operations. This executive position serves as a role model for ethical management behavior and promotes an awareness and understanding of positive ethical principles and compliance with federal and state laws in all areas of the organization.

The successful candidate must have a Juris Doctorate degree and be admitted (or eligible for admission) to the Vermont Bar. In addition, candidates should have an outstanding record of achievement with extensive experience within healthcare, preferably with a health system or hospital. Candidates should be knowledgeable of all elements of legal services and corporate compliance in relationship to healthcare delivery, including strategy, business planning, operations, and finance.
