Each year, 40,000 people in the U.S. die from gun violence. We can change that. No organization has a more comprehensive and systematic approach to ending America’s gun violence epidemic. POSITION SUMMARY

With the gun violence prevention movement at an historic legal crossroads, Brady is seeking a dynamic leader to help identify and implement game-changing legal strategies to help redefine the interpretation of the Second Amendment. For 25 years, Brady’s Legal Action Project (LAP) has led the legal community’s efforts against the corporate gun lobby and negligent gun manufacturers and sellers, and on behalf of gun violence victims andeveryone’s public health and safety. Brady’s Chief Legal Officer (CLO) position will take these efforts to new heights by rallying the legal community around the strategies and landmark cases that will help achieve Brady’s goal toreduce gun violence. The CLO will report directly to the President and work closely with the rest of the Department Heads, including Communications, Development, Organizing and Policy. They will be responsible for strategicintegration of Brady’s legal efforts to further Brady’s focused, sustained campaigns, including its effort to overturn theProtection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. They will also be responsible for overseeing litigation strategy, andworking closely with the Litigation Committee from the Board of Trustees. This position includes formal representation of the organization in both a corporate and programmatic role before legal bodies, organizations,donors, and the media.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Shape and drive organization’s legal action strategy and its integration with overall organizational strategy and goals

In collaboration with the Board’s Litigation Committee, determine the selection of cases to support the strategyand mission to reduce gun violence

Oversee and engage in the strategic recruitment of pro-bono legal resources, key partnerships and in fundraising outreach within the legal community

Maintain high level relationships within firms and organizations of key partners and with appropriate government officials

Provide insight, analysis, counsel to others within the organization on legal and policy issues

Work collaboratively with all departments to execute against Brady’s strategy and campaigns

Manage and oversee the work of Legal Action Project staff

Prepare annual plans and propose annual budgets for the Legal department

Help recruit and select pro-bono law firms working on Brady projects

Participate in the creation and review of legislative proposals

Oversee the legal and policy analysis relating to possible regulatory and legislative proposals

Advise on and help develop opportunities for legal activity of importance to Brady’s mission

Participate in articles, speeches and debates on legal and policy issues relating to gun violence, includingconstitutional and liability issues, which serve a public advocacy function

Function as a spokesperson for the organization

Performs other duties and responsibilities as necessary

QUALIFICATIONS

Law degree

Experience in non-profit, public interest organization

At least ten years of experience in a supervisory/management position

At least seven years litigation experience

Experience with complex litigation (e.g. Class action, Multidistrict)

Demonstrated skills and experience in strategic thinking and legal and policy strategy

Experience planning and implementing legal action and research

Demonstrated ability to facilitate relationships and work collaboratively

Success working as an integrated organizational unit to achieve cross-functional objectives

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Enjoys a small/medium sized organization

Commitment to sensible gun laws and reducing gun violence
