Who we are and what we do:

TennCare is Tennessee's managed care Medicaid program that provides health insurance coverage to certain groups of low-income individuals such as pregnant women, children, caretaker relatives of young children, older adults, and adults with physical disabilities. TennCare provides coverage for approximately 1.6 million Tennesseans and operates with an annual budget of approximately $12 billion. It is run by the Division of TennCare with oversight and some funding from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Job Overview:

TennCare is made up of the Tennessee Medicaid program, the Office of eHealth Initiatives, the Strategic Planning Initiatives Group and Cover Tennessee. TennCare's Office of General Counsel (OGC) is responsible for providing legal advice and counsel to all divisions of TennCare. The Chief Deputy General Counsel will report directly to the General Counsel, working closely with her to assist on numerous matters of importance to the agency, as well as supervising the Federal Unit of OGC. The Federal Unit specifically handles a wide variety of matters including federal litigation oversight, requests for research, diverse legal advice and ethics compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school in the United States

A current, valid license to practice law in Tennessee or be eligible for licensure under Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 7, Article X.

Five or more years of relevant experience

Excellent communication, legal research, and writing skills

Organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize, multi-task, adapt to changing priorities, and manage workload to meet specific deadlines with minimal supervision

Applicants must maintain excellent professional and interpersonal relationships and have the ability to take on multiple tasks on a wide variety of complex issues

Experience working in or with Medicaid, disability-related programs, or healthcare is preferred

Experience with litigation and state procurements is beneficial
