General Counsel

Americo’s office of general counsel is seeking a senior leader to serve as the General Counsel of the Americo Life Companies. The VP and General Counsel will directly supervise an in-house legal department and work with outside law firms on litigation and general commercial matters for the company. The role will supervise the corporate governance work of multiple entities. Together, with the separate Regulatory Compliance department, the legal department reviews and responds to policy claim issues, supervises claim litigation, and assists with insurance code regulatory compliance issues. The department also handles general contracting review, outside insurance agent issues, advertising review and HR issues. This position works closely with the senior executive team as well as managers at all levels. The Life Companies are privately owned and high-level interaction with ownership frequently occurs. Involvement with non-life insurance affiliated companies occurs regularly.

Key Responsibilities:

Directly supervises an in-house legal department of three attorneys and one paralegal

Works with outside law firms on litigation and general commercial matters

Supervises the corporate governance work of multiple entities

Reviews and respond to policy claim issues, supervise claim litigation, and assist with insurance code regulatory compliance issues

Handles general contracting review, outside insurance agent issues, advertising review, and HR issues.

Works closely with ownership, the senior executive team, and managers at all levels.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Legal degree with 20 plus years of broad, legal experience either in an in-house position or at a significant law firm, including senior level leadership experience.

Life insurance industry experience, especially regulatory experience, is highly desirable.

HR legal experience highly desirable, both with in-house advice and EEOC matters.

Corporate/commercial litigation experience desirable.

Emphasis is on ability to give detailed executive level advice and also work in a hands-on manner on multiple projects, and manage the department.

High drive, initiative, and discretion.

Senior executive demeanor and management skills.

Education:

JD degree from an accredited U.S. Law School
