The Job

The Deputy General Counsel partners serves as internal counsel for the organization, advising and representing SCAN in all areas of health care, contracting, regulatory advice, risk mitigation, corporate governance, and general legal matters. This role partners with SCAN’s business leaders to foster legal and ethical behaviors in achievement of SCAN’s mission. This role will also provide legal support to SCAN’s portfolio companies and affiliates.

You Will

Works collaboratively with the General Counsel/Chief Legal Officer to protect the rights and fulfill the legal, contractual, and regulatory obligations of the organization and its affiliates.

Provides supervision to legal department staff, including attorneys and support staff.

Accomplishes staff results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; coaching and counseling employees; initiating, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies, and procedures.

Maintains staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees; maintaining a safe and secure work environment; developing personal growth opportunities.

Works collaboratively with the General Counsel/Chief Legal Officer, and/or directly with operational departments of SCAN, to support operational activities and/or strategic initiatives of the organization.

Interprets laws, rulings, and regulations that relate to the business of SCAN and its affiliates, including but not limited to those related to: health care; corporate matters; regulatory and compliance matters and other applicable regulations and best practices.

Gathers evidence and information for management decision making with respect to major business issues; provides guidance regarding risk mitigation.

Provides consultation and assistance with, and participation in, Board meetings and activities as well as corporate governance matters.

Prepares and reviews legal documents, including, but not limited to, contracts, leases, government and vendorcontracts, regulatory and sub-regulatory requirements.

Negotiates and prepares agreements and legal documents as appropriate.

Your Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor.
  • Active member of a state bar where SCAN operates, subject to compliance with state bar requirements.
  • 10+ years of experience in healthcare.
  • 10+ years of experience as a practicing healthcare attorney; Medicare Advantage experience preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex issues and provide recommendations for solution.
  • Proven ability to exercise independent thought and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization, including Board members.
  • Proficient in MS Office
  • Knowledge and/or familiarity with the principles of project and program management.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement new, replacement systems, and gain buy-in from appropriate audience.
  • Able to lead and influence those without direct reporting relationships to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ability to communicate with clarity, the vision, value, and tasks to formal and informal audiences.
  • Able to develop relationships quickly and leverage working relationships to drive performance outcomes.
  • Ability to work with all levels of staff, within and external to the organization to achieve goals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills; ability to multitask and to appropriately maintain confidentiality.
