The General Counsel of State Street serves as a trusted advisor to the executive leadership team within State Street. The position requires an in-depth understanding of, among other areas, the global laws and regulations impacting asset servicing, asset management, Global Markets and a related ancillary services. The General Counsel is a member of Executive Management and reports to the Chief Executive Officer.

While the role has been advertised as being Boston based, we would be open to also considering qualified candidates who ae based in other locations in North America / EMEA as long as those locations align with our global footprint.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Ability to act as both the most senior legal advisor to the CEO and other members of the Executive Committee (EC) and also ability to contribute at EC on non-legal matters; role requires ability to communicate well, distil at executive level a broad range of legal issues, to constructively challenge and integrate business perspective into legal analysis.

Demonstrated ability to develop constructive relationship with key regulators with respect to both policy and supervisory issues and to have a strong voice in developing the Company’s messages to regulators and other governmental officials.

Record of collaborative working relationship with control and corporate function leadership.

Demonstrated ability to project confidence and manage constructively in environments of high stress and risk.

Record of leading and/or being a trusted advisor to senior executives on strategically important corporate initiatives including Mergers and Acquisitions, strategic alliances, major regulatory remediation efforts and other commercial arrangements; supports the related structuring and negotiation activities.

Record of overseeing and advising management and the board on matters involving significant enforcement and litigation risk; successful resolving such matters while minimizing financial and reputational impact on the Company; providing preventive counselling with respect to the legal, regulatory and reputational risks associated with business practices.

Demonstrated skills in negotiating, drafting and implementing a wide variety of complex, multi-party transactions and/or contractual agreements and the ability to manage a legal team contracting with key clients and vendors.

Accountable for overseeing the global security function and programs that; protect the company’s physical infrastructure across all global locations while monitoring the well-being of people within our space; ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and oversees the management of external crime and safety risks.

Responsible for guiding the function which develops strategies on behalf of the company to address legislative proposals; prepares and present testimony before legislative committee, agency hearings and investigations.

Ability to attract and retain a highly effective global team of professionals who provide proactive legal services in support of strategic plans.
