Planned Parenthood Federation of America is seeking a General Counsel who is an experienced leader and knowledgeable of legal matters concerning nonprofit management, board governance, compliance and health policy.

THE POSITION

The General Counsel role provides advice and legal guidance to PPFA staff and national office leaders on the full spectrum of issues that arise in the course of governing the organization. The General Counsel will support the National Office health care, advocacy, education and research programs and operations functions, advising on non-profit corporation law, tax, intellectual property, employment, and health care operations laws.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Represent Planned Parenthood as its chief legal officer, serving as the legal representative and a senior advisor to the President and Board Chair on board affair matters;
  • Ensure PPFA, Action Fund, PAC, and SuperPAC compliance with all laws, regulations, and rules enforced by U.S. federal and state and local regulators with emphasis on IRS and Federal Election Law;
  • Oversee a combined team of 20 direct and indirect reports with an annual budget of approximately $6 Million;
  • Oversee significant business relationships and contract negotiations;
  • Oversee enterprise-wide risk mitigation strategy; advise on issues that present risk to Planned Parenthood’s reputation, legal and financial condition as a tax-exempt organization;
  • Develop operational efficiencies in advising on the legal and tax ramifications of Planned Parenthood’s programs, operations, and activities;
  • Work with executive leadership to provide guidance and oversight as appropriate with respect to Planned Parenthood’s advocacy initiatives;
  • Work closely with other departments, particularly finance, information technology, information security, global security, and human resources.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

  • The General Counsel will be an accomplished, dedicated attorney with broad corporate generalist experience preferably in the healthcare industry, including (but not limited to) experience leading the legal function. This individual may either be in a general counsel or in a deputy or divisional general counsel role for at least three years.
  • The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience dealing with a broad array of legal matters pertaining to compliance, privacy, intellectual property, regulatory management, affiliations, licensure matters, insurance and risk specifically pertaining to 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations.
  • Proven ability to operate in a collaborative and highly matrixed environment, with experience establishing or maintaining systems, processes, policies and procedures to run a highly professional department.
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills, as well as strong executive presence and judgment with a sophisticated approach to the unique challenges of a world-class healthcare organization.
  • A record of successfully managing and developing a diverse and talented staff. Adept at collaborating across divisions, functions, and geography, with a skill for engaging colleagues at all levels in projects and processes while continuing to own and drive them.
  • Lived experience with a strong commitment to and understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the intersection of health disparities, reproductive, and racial justice.
