As lead in-house legal officer, the General Counsel works under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer and has a responsibility for a wide range of legal matters, with an emphasis on contracting, in-house employment policies, regulatory oversight and related legal considerations, providing legal advice and strategy to management on legal implications of proposed actions and policies. The General Counsel will also oversee external counsel on various matters related to arbitration and the court. We are ideally looking for someone with both an excellent grasp of the law as well as a strong business mind.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Advises management on legal implications of ongoing regulatory developments, proposed actions, and policies

Takes part in the negotiation of contracts and addendums

Identification of potential risks to the Company and development of plans and processes to minimize or eliminate the risks

Oversee and manage outside counsel in their defense and prosecution of lawsuits and arbitrations

Develops litigation strategies to support servicing and collections

Experience handling employment related matters from inception through appeal

Experience with providing legal advice and counsel to human resources

Experience working with a dynamic, fast moving CEO, providing clear advice that is both proactive and reactive as situations arise

Excellent academic credentials and either top firm and/or in-house experience is required

Education and Experience

J.D. and a minimum of 5 years of professional legal experience

Experience as either in-house legal counsel or with a well-respected national or local law firm

Admission and status in good standing with CA State Bar (either as CA Bar License or In-House registered counsel, if barred in another state)

Proven strategic leadership and executive management skills

Prefer experience in matters involving regulation and financial services

Required Skills and Abilities

Excellent knowledge of general business and management principles, such as strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership, production methods, and coordination of people and resources

Excellent ability to negotiate and manage complex commercial agreements, litigations, business processes and procedures

Excellent oral, written and presentation skills and the ability to understand the needs of internal and external customers

Excellent analytical and problem-solving ability when situations are very complex

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to inspire others

Excellent organizational planning and follow-up skills

Must be available to work flexible hours

Proficient with PC and MS Office Suite
