Under supervision of the Chief Legal & Program Officer, the General Counsel shall be responsible for interface with outside litigation counsel with regard to insurance claims litigation, commercial leasing on behalf of Samaritan Daytop Village and Samaritan Daytop Foundation, landlord-tenant litigation, employment practices litigation, and other similar matters. The General Counsel shall also provide advice to, and otherwise assist the Chief Legal & Program Officer and senior management regarding commencement and/or defense of litigation regarding various matters affecting the programs and policies of Samaritan Daytop Village. The General Counsel shall also generally assist on matters as may be assigned from time to time by the Chief Legal Officer; and shall work with other members of the Office of the President on other matters as assigned. This work is carried out in support of the mission and goals of Samaritan Daytop Village.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serve as in-house counsel for the organization and oversee day to day operations of the Legal Department.

Part of the Executive team, advising on matters of corporate governance, finance, contracts, risk management, real estate and employment

Counsel senior management on legal issues relating to their programs and services

Involved in the development of the organization’s real estate acquisition and management strategy

Monitor and manage litigation in conjunction with outside counsel

Interface with Board on matters as needed

Supervise professional and administrative staff.

Manage Subpoena request/medical record request

Assist in responding to external audits, reviews and complaint investigations

Draft, review and negotiate vendor contracts/procurement and other agreements.

Keeps abreast of changes in field.

Performs other duties as requested.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Experience and Skills Required:

Law degree from an accredited law school.

Approximately 5+ years relevant legal experience (ie., in-house attorney on matters of corporate law, contracts, real estate, labor law, litigation, negligence or with public sector, non-profit or health care related organization or public sector).

Two to five years’ experience in a management/leadership role, specifically experience managing professional and administrative staff on multiple projects to ensure deadlines and objectives are met.

Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills, as well as conceptual and analytic skills are necessary in order to review and articulate corporate objectives and Federal regulations

Ability to maintain the utmost integrity in handling discreet and confidential matters

Ability to travel to program locations and other locations as necessary.

Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office.

License/Certification Required:

License to Practice Law in New York State

Active NYS Bar Admission

Preferred Education, Experience and/or Skills:

Knowledge of real estate development or commercial leasing in New York City.

Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders.

Strong commitment to building a diverse and inclusive culture within law enforcement, city agencies, healthcare services, and community-based social service providers.
