Chief Legal Officer/General Counsel

WittKieffer has been retained by UnityPoint Health (UPH) in Des Moines, Iowa, to identify the organization's next Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel.

With more than nearly 300 physician clinics, 32 hospitals (fully controlled or managed) in metropolitan and rural communities and home care services across nine distinct regions, UPH provides care throughout Iowa, western Illinois and southern Wisconsin. UPH is the nation's 13th largest non-profit health system and the fourth largest non-denominational health system in America with projected annual revenues of $4.4 Billion.

Reporting directly to UPH's President and Chief Executive Officer, Clay Holderman, the Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel will serve as a legal advisor to UPH's senior leadership team and Board of Directors. This executive will provide legal insight with respect to the strategic direction of the organization and participate in a wide range of projects. The Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel will oversee outside counsel and provide guidance on all legal initiatives, including advising on corporate and commercial transactions, litigation, employment, regulatory matters, intellectual property and other aspects of system development and integration. This executive will lead a high performing, effective and efficient legal team, ensuring their accountability while also effectively mentoring this group and building a positive, open and responsive team environment. Currently, the legal department has an annual budget of approximately $6 million with 17 attorneys and a total of 26 FTEs.

The ideal candidate will be a highly engaged and visible executive with a strong health law background. Candidates should possess a law degree from an ABA accredited school of law and have membership or be eligible for membership in the Iowa State Bar.
