JOB SUMMARY:

Manages the Claims Legal Operation consisting of in-house counsel to the company and insured’s including Staff Counsel Operations, Coverage Counsel, Liability Counsel and Compliance Counsel Divisions who assess the legal exposures of Selective and provide litigation management advice to the claims organization, management of outside panel counsel and bill review functions, provide strategic direction to the organization, and line of business claims expertise, policy form review. Plans, directs, and monitors all legal operations and activities relating to coverage evaluation and training, bad faith and extra contractual litigation, legal updates to the filed claim operations, SLR high exposure litigation management and claims litigation handled by staff attorneys. Ensures the maintenance of ethical and fiduciary standards in all legal matters handled by all claims attorneys.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Directs activities and manages in-house law firm. Guides and develops staff. Ensures proper staffing levels and delegates authority to Claim counsel and staff attorneys.

Develops, implements and communicates policies and procedures to ensure efficient and effective handling of all Claims legal matters and litigation and claims litigation by staff attorneys. Develops practices to ensure ethical and fiduciary standards are adhered to.

Communicates and supports corporate policies and strategies to Claims counsel and staff attorneys and addresses any concerns regarding these policies or strategies.

Ensures cost effective handling of all claims litigated by outside law firms.

Conducts periodic audits and inspections of case files to ensure proper case handling and adherence to program standards and company policy.

May provide memoranda of law, pleadings, motions, briefs, and/or assist outside counsel or staff attorneys in preparing for trials, hearings, and arbitration.

KNOWLEDGE AND REQUIREMENTS

Proficient in standard business software applications such as Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook)

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

College degree and Juris Doctorate (JD) degree preferred

15+ years claims litigation experience

10+ years detailed knowledge of insurance coverage issues, policy interpretation and excess coverage analysis

10+ year’s successful managerial or supervisory experience of trial attorneys

10+ years excellent customer service skills and a demonstrated commitment to inspiring subordinates to adopt the same approach

Preferred location is Charlotte, NC but can be at any of our Legal office locations
