About the Role

This role is for General Counsel reporting to the CEO and is based in Austin, TX. This role is eligible for our hybrid work from home arrangement affording a blend of remote and in-office work. Candidates should be in the Austin metro area or able to easily commute to Austin.

The Counsel will provide strategic legal advice and guidance to the company on business and intellectual property matters. The Counsel will act as the primary “go-to” person for employees for legal matters, questions, and risk assessments.

The Counsel will be responsible for negotiating and drafting service agreements, distribution agreements, publishing agreements, and other types of agreements as business needs require. Counsel is also responsible for managing the company’s trademark registrations and NDAs. Counsel will provide input on various circumstances where permissions or releases might be required of an author. Knowledge of IP law is a plus. The Counsel will be expected to provide proactive, strategic legal input in respect of the company’s legal, commercial, managerial and organizational issues and will work closely with other members of senior management and employees at all levels of the organization.

Qualifications

Law degree (J.D.) from an accredited university or law school

Admitted and in good standing to practice law in at least one US state

Minimum of three years of experience as a practicing lawyer with a law firm and/or a corporation, preferably in the publishing or media sectors

Knowledge of IP law preferred

Ability to understand business objectives and evaluate risk while providing legal advice responsive to the business needs

Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to work independently and accurately under tight deadlines

Ability to lead and/or work well in a team environment

Ability to manage a challenging workload independently while exercising good judgment

Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete many time-sensitive directives in an accurate, efficient, and collaborative manner.

Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate and interact effectively with employees at all levels of the organization

Versatile and self-motivated person who can think creatively on matters requiring creative solutions

A genuine interest in books, big ideas, and the publishing industry.
