Purpose of the Role:

  • Provide legal advice and counsel on a wide variety of complex legal matters and topics
  • Work in close collaboration with the business in determining the best course for the achievement of company objectives in compliance with applicable legal requirements
  • Manage outside counsel and other professionals whose advice is sought in connection with addressing legal and compliance issues
  • Work regularly with the international business teams in Canada, Germany, Austria, and France to ensure compliance as well as key team member with future expansion efforts
  • Determine the departments strategic goals, work with team on the achievement of these goals and manage and adhere to the departmental budget
  • Possess ability to straddle the legal and business needs effectively to provide solutions rather than roadblocks

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice and counsel on a wide variety of complex legal matters and topics
  • Work in close collaboration with the business in determining the best course for the achievement of company objectives in compliance with applicable legal requirements
  • Manage outside counsel and other professionals whose advice is sought in connection with addressing legal and compliance issues
  • Work regularly with the international business teams in Canada and Germany to ensure compliance
  • Determine the departments strategic goals, work with team on the achievement of these goals and manage and adhere to the departmental budget
  • Possess ability to straddle the legal and business needs effectively in order to provide solutions rather than roadblocks
  • Review and/or write all significant contracts and work directly with business team lead to effectuate best deal for the Company. Advise management regarding legal interpretation of contract or regulatory language
  • Review and provide advice on legal issues associated with proposed settlements of claims or other litigation against or by the Company
  • Provide daily work direction to and training of Legal staff
  • Supervise Legal support staff - make decisions regarding performance management, pay adjustments, time-off requests, and training/staff development. Make recommendations regarding hiring/firing decisions
  • Supervise outside legal counsel and hold accountable for performance in management of cases and evaluation of legal issues for the Company
  • Provide legal expertise and advice to internal business clients on numerous matters, including contracts, product issues, regulatory, litigation, etc.
  • Embody the highest level of professionalism and act as a role model for staff
  • Represent the Company with the external legal community, with the Direct Sales organization and with various outside vendors and regulatory agencies
  • Initiative - be proactive rather than reactive in both thought and action - identify areas for improvement and take necessary steps to implement those changes
  • Make decisions and recommendations about legal issues that often balance significant financial risk and benefit for the Company
  • Research and advise without heavy reliance on outside counsel where practical and feasible in order to keep legal spend to minimum
  • Approve soundness of contracts before management commits financial assets
  • Make decisions regarding staff pay adjustments

Education and Experience:

  • JD from an accredited law school, with strong academic credentials, required.
  • 5-7 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm or corporate legal department required
  • Specialties desired: corporate generalist, general commercial/contracts, product, compliance and litigation, international/GDPR
