Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Degree in business law or pre-law studies.
  • J.D. or Master’s Law Degree required.

Minimum Experience/Knowledge:

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience practicing law required.
  • Minimum 7 – 10 years’ experience managing legal affairs in a health system organization required.
  • Strong law knowledge in general, educational and healthcare law.
  • Knowledge and experience in academic research, compliance, medical malpractice, healthcare regulatory affairs and governmental relations.
  • Demonstrated leadership and complex organizational management skills.
  • Demonstrated experience managing attorneys, paralegals and staff and balancing the workload and priorities for the team.
  • Demonstrates ability to utilize effective, appropriate and diplomatic oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent observation, decision making and negotiation skills.
  • Exceptional analytic, writing and consultative skills.
  • Ability to think out of the box in order to solve legal complications.
  • Demonstrated skill in articulating the priorities of a complex, evolving organization and positing legal strategies to manage these priorities within appropriate legal risk.
  • Exceptional presentation skills to executive leaders, Board members or the public community.
  • Ability to work independently with rapidly changing priorities, fluid authority structure, varying deadlines and a heavy workload.

Required License/Certification:

  • Licensed California Attorney certified by State Bar of California.
  • LA City Fire and Safety Certification. If no certification upon hire, must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required in LA City only)

The Chief Legal Officer of Keck Medicine of USC is a leader who will help the organization innovate, grow and solve complex problems that have a direct impact on the lives of patients and their families. As a senior officer of the health system, the Chief Legal Officer helps to ensure the university's health care operations are safe, ethical, and compliant. The Chief Legal Officer reports directly to the CEO of Keck Medicine of USC, with the ability to report independently to the university president and board of Keck Medicine, if needed. He/She will also work closely with the GC of USC to ensure legal matters are managed consistently.
