The Role

The General Counsel at Christian Care Ministry (CCM) is responsible for all operational legal affairs of CCM. This role provides legal counsel to the Chief Executive Officer and senior management, and partners with all levels of the organization to develop and execute legal strategy that protects the ministry from risk while implementing policy that helps foster a growing enterprise. Key responsibilities include overseeing delivery of legal services and resources to accomplish CCM’s goals, strategies, and priorities; working with in house counsel and external counsel to address a variety of legal matters, providing high-level support for internal employee hiring, discipline, and termination issues, reviewing contracts and providers, advising on compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and serving as the primary overseer of litigation matters that impact the organization. If the Board of Directors engages outside legal counsel to advise on Board governance matters, this role will coordinate with such counsel.


Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Play a vital part in the exercise and expression of the organization’s Christian beliefs and in carrying out its mission.
  • Take overall responsibility for designing, developing, and delivering the organization's legal strategy and services, ensuring full compliance and accountability.
  • Render legal analysis and guidance on the organization’s policy and organizational activities, including compliance with laws in the geographic locations where the organization operates. This includes the legal aspects of employment, benefits, tax-exempt status, and religious entity status.
  • Represent the organization in external relations with members, vendors, the public, and others.
  • Serve as a resource and consultant to executive level leaders, rendering analysis and guidance in the areas of employee relations, separations, benefits, and wage and hour regulations.
  • Give accurate and timely counsel to executives on a variety of legal topics (labor law, partnerships, new ventures, new program offerings, legislation).
  • Manage pending and active litigation.
  • Specify internal governance policies and regularly monitor compliance.
  • Research and evaluate various risk factors regarding business decisions and operations.
  • Apply effective risk management techniques and offer proactive advice on possible legal issues.
  • Oversee insurance coverage.
  • Communicate and negotiate with external parties (regulators, external counsel, government authorities); creating relationships of trust.
  • Draft and solidify agreements, contracts, and other legal documents to ensure the organization’s full legal rights.
  • All other duties as assigned

Education and/or Experience

  • Juris Doctorate required
  • License to practice law in Florida, or to obtain such license within 12 months of hire through examination or reciprocity required
  • Previous working experience as a Legal Counsel for at least 10 years required
  • Experience in strategic management and leadership across company functions directing substantial resources over long timeframes (more than 10 years) is a plus
  • Experience in financial services, healthcare, and/or nonprofit firms is preferred

Other

  • This job will supervise the In House Counsel and any support staff.
  • This job may require occasional travel, expected to be less than 20%.
