Responsible to the President and CEO in providing legal advice and guidance on a wide range of topics across a breadth of areas that have a significant impact on patient care delivery, risk management, human resources issues, medical staff, physician network services and business operations, including third party payer contracts and appeals of denied claims. Performs research and analysis of legal issues and conducts investigations into legal or compliance issues, drafting legal opinions or findings. Oversees contract management, including drafting and negotiating contracts, supporting transactions of various natures, assisting in analysis and mitigation of compliance issues, mitigate legal expenditures by directing activities of outside counsel and identifying new or emerging areas of risk. Protects the organization’s rights in contract negotiations, settlements and litigation. Provides legal direction for risk management, including loss prevention, occupational safety and compliance with federal and state requirements applicable to operations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• In depth knowledge of healthcare law and risk management principles.

• Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, statutes, rules and regulations pertaining to healthcare, as well as applicable accreditation standards or regulatory agency requirements and ensures compliance with all such laws, regulations and standards.

• Proficient understanding of business sensitivities and confidentiality.

• Proficiency in using computers, software, and web-based applications.

• Ability to be a motivated self-starter and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment within a team.

• Strong customer service orientation and ability to demonstrate a high level of integrity, as well as professional, ethical and respectful behavior in all interactions.

• Ability to be flexible with varied assignments and willing to develop new areas of expertise.

• Excellent interpersonal skills, including being approachable, effective listening, appropriate use of style and language for the audience, and the ability to work with all levels of management.

• Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to present information clearly and professionally.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.

EXPERIENCE

Required – 5+ years of legal experience in a law firm or in-house legal department with knowledge of healthcare law and compliance regulations.

Preferred – 5 years of experience in litigation management and professional liability.

LICENSURE

Licensed to practice law in the State of Rhode Island.
