Our company has been growing at an extremely rapid pace as we scale up to meet the generational crisis presented by the pandemic. The General Counsel role is responsible for reviewing contracts and other legal documents between BookNook and our customers, making key decisions on acceptance of terms and conditions, and evaluating the legal risks prior to signing various agreements. This position will also work collaboratively across teams as a thought leader on legal, risk, and compliance-based decision-making while managing company usage of other contracted lawyers for BookNook.
The right applicant will be keen on balancing excellent legal compliance with a proactive, business-friendly and technically sound approach. They will also be comfortable with change and welcome the challenges of being a key player in a fast paced, highly data-driven organization. The part-time (50% time) General Counsel role reports to the BookNook Chief of Staff.
You are a good fit for this role if you have
5+ years of experience working on issues of data privacy and security7+ years of experience in contracts law
7+ years of firm experience, with at least 4 of those years being in-house experience
Juris Doctorate
Passed the bar in at least one state, ideally California, Texas, or New York
Demonstrated understanding and experience working on compliance, regulations and laws relating to K-12 education
Excellent verbal and written communications skills, especially the ability to explain and discuss legal, risk and compliance issues in clear and concise terms
Ability to act as the Company’s official legal representative, including working with outside counsel, and overseeing all legal matters as a whole
Being able to craft and review legal strategy of the Company
Advanced negotiation skillsAbility to think quickly, critically and strategicallyExcellent project management skills
