AHS is seeking a qualified, motivated, team-oriented and engaged Chief Legal Officer (CLO) to join our Executive Leadership staff. AHS is a $28M, private non-profit health provider serving the 5 counties of Southwest Colorado and is the only Colorado entity that holds the combined status of a Federally Qualified Health Center, a Community Mental Health Center and a licensed Substance Use Provider. Five 5+ years of legal healthcare experience preferred, but not required.

Description of Responsibilities:

The Chief Legal Officer (CLO) serves as the General Counsel for Axis Health System (AHS) providing expert in-house legal, privacy and compliance counsel, as well as strategic legal counsel related to managed care relationships and contracting. Position is responsible for legal education of staff and for the Board, executive team and organization, also as a resource to support day to day operations and support the continued evolution, development and maturation of the healthcare delivery system. The position has the principal authority and responsibility for the development, implementation, oversight and evaluation of a dynamic, integrating enterprise risk management strategy and compliance program for AHS with direct oversight responsibility for key administrative functions and staff including compliance, quality, health information management and contracting. Working in a partnership capacity, supporting and aligning operations to include human resources, business operations and risk management is essential purpose.

This is an Executive Management position, hence is called upon to provide expertise, counsel and leadership regarding legal issues, privacy and compliance, advising on legal strategies that enhance the work in support of the mission and values of Axis. The CLO exercises independent judgment and action within the context of the areas of responsibility and organizational goals, recognizing that they always represents the organization and its mission. This is not only a trusted legal advisor requiring impeccable integrity, but also holds the responsibility for contributing both specific expertise and leadership in support of operational excellence. Because of changing landscape of healthcare insurance, regulatory uncertainty, heightened public scrutiny, and the growing need for data security, this position must provide leadership that can effect change, exert influence across business lines, and partner with the CEO, management and the Board in their respective roles and responsibilities.

Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Employee is frequently required to walk, sit, stand, or kneel and occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop. Must have ability to sit for longer periods at a computer. Employee must be able to travel between AHS locations. Possible potential exposure to communicable disease. Bachelor’s degree

Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school

License: License to practice law in Colorado.

Minimum Experience: Demonstrated professional management and leadership experience

Preferred Education and Experience

Minimum Experience: Five 5+ years of legal healthcare experience.

Must be knowledgeable regarding patient health information and HIPAA compliance.

Must be organized and demonstrate the ability to follow guidelines.

Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Must demonstrate the ability to be self-directed.

Must demonstrate the ability to follow the organization’s confidentiality and security rules.
