This position is responsible for guiding the association on significant legal matters and for establishing and implementing the strategic direction of the Legal, Committee & Society Affairs, Legislative and Political Affairs, and Policy and Advocacy departments. Serves as chief legal counsel and public policy advisor to AUA’s Management, Board of Directors, committees, and functional divisions of the organization. Serves as senior staff liaison to the AUA Board of Directors, AUAPAC, Public Policy Council and related committee chairs. Serves as an active member of the Executive Team by implementing Board of Director policies and making association-wide operating decisions. Participates in AUA’s strategic planning process across all AUA departments.

In this leadership role, you will act as liaison with the Board of Directors and ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­various Committees. We are searching for an agile, innovative leader capable of developing strong effective working relationships with AUA departments.

As an active member of the Executive team, you will work with the CEO and Executive Team to develop the organization’s strategic goals and objectives and to implement the Board of Directors and AUA’s policies.

Position Highlights

Legal

  • Provides or supervises legal support and strategic counsel for AUA and Urology Care Foundation including the AUA Quality (AQUA) Registry, AUA/UCF’s advocacy and policy programs, and AUAPAC.
  • Serves as lead legal and strategic consultant to Chief Human Resources Officer with respect to new human resources initiatives or significant employment disputes.
  • Provides strategic direction in refining and applying AUA’s rigorous conflict of interest (COI) and ethics policies, including conducting or supervising investigations of alleged COI or ethics violations.

Committee & Society Affairs

  • Leads the Committee & Society Affairs team in overseeing all aspects of AUA’s committee system.
  • Supervises and coordinates Board meeting logistics with CSA and Convention and Meetings teams; oversees Board orientation program and task forces as needed, and serves as primary staff liaison for Board members.
  • Responsible for leading team that manages all legislative and grassroots advocacy efforts, including oversight of AUA’s D.C. advocacy office, AUAPAC and state activities.
  • Works closely with AUA Legislative and Political Affairs team and contract lobbyists to develop and implement AUA’s federal and state legislative priorities.
  • Works closely with AUA Policy and Advocacy team to develop and direct a proactive agenda of policy activities to achieve AUA’s policy and advocacy goals and priorities.
  • Integrates AUA’s and Urology Care Foundation’s advocacy strategy and messaging in conjunction with patient groups and research advocates.

Legislative & Political Affairs

Policy & Advocacy

  • Responsible for leading team that manages insurance policy and policy analysis, including Medicare and third-party payor activities

Requirements for Success

  • Juris Doctor or advanced law degree from accredited U. S. law school and an active law license.
  • Minimum ten years’ senior management experience with proven leadership and significant engagement on legal, policy and/or litigation issues in health care field. Expertise in governance and board administration required.
  • Thorough knowledge of legislative and regulatory processes at federal and state levels. Knowledge of physician payment policy a plus.
  • Combination of law firm, in-house and public sector/non-profit experience strongly preferred.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills and demonstrated ability to serve as a strategic counselor and persuasive advocate.
  • Proven consensus builder with the ability to earn the respect of multiple constituencies, both internally and externally.
