Mission for the position:

The Deputy General Counsel will be Leap’s first in-house attorney, charged with the mission of supporting the business by driving the development of programmatic legal matter handling / operations across a range of matters particularly germane to our business, and handling matters which arise on an ad hoc basis along the way. The attorney in this role will work closely with our senior leaders and other managers, and outside counsel, to support and drive the development of the legal function in accordance with the company’s overall strategy and long-term vision, with a particular focus on people, processes and systems (e.g. decision making frameworks, and tools). The Deputy General Counsel will have the opportunity to hire and build a team in the future.

Key responsibilities:

Advise on process improvements; assess, establish and upgrade / continuously improve legal programs and practices over time. As a generalist, handle matters and develop practices / programmatic legal operations across a wide range of legal subject matter, directly and/or in close collaboration with outside counsel as needed, including:

Contracting – brand customer service agreements, store location leasing, and vendor service agreements

Corporate

Financing

Employment

Data, security, privacy and other IP (e.g. patents)

Insurance/risk management

Cultivate and manage relationships with outside counsel – generalists/general counsel and specialists

Research and render advice as to strategy and tactics pertaining to new areas of business/development, some of which may include new business and legal grounds or constructs (Leap is a pioneer in the industry)

Represent Leap in all legal matters, day to day operations and developmental endeavors with integrity, while keeping the company’s vision and overall strategy in mind, preserving and protecting the Company’s reputation. Develop strong working relationships based on integrity and accountability with collaborators throughout the organization.

Most desired competencies & attributes:

We’re in search of a candidate who will have developed strong skills as an attorney and overall high business acumen via prior experience in one or more firms, and in-house, who enjoys working in a fast-paced, high growth and innovative/creative environment with an orientation toward fundamentals, results, and “keeping it simple.” The ideal candidate prefers to build trust by consistently delivering and supporting colleagues, customers and other stakeholders, and is open to creative and strategic thinking even while insisting, and demonstrates or has:

8+ years experience in business/corporate law within a firm and/or in the internal legal department of a high growth company, ideally within tech/software, commerce/consumer brand building (ecomm, retail or both), or platform businesses

J.D. degree or equivalent, and membership in at least one U.S. state bar

Strong business acumen and creative/critical thinking skills – able to draw from experience, research and/or knowledge of the law to find solutions and innovative strategies that may not readily apparent

Capable of strategically influencing business partners through diplomacy, building consensus, negotiating, and exercising leadership skills.

Absorb large quantities of information, then distill it into something manageable and logical; accomplishes tasks by considering all areas involved, no matter how small; concern for all aspects of the job while keeping the big picture in focus

Flexibility and desire to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial startup environment

High integrity and ability to communicate with others in a way that instill confidence in intentions and those of the organization

Track record of success hiring and managing team members

Strong written and verbal communication skills

High-degree of professionalism and ability to communicate with all areas and levels of the company, as well as members of the company’s equity partner

Outcomes & measures of success:

Successful creation and management of legal practices within the firm – effective policies, processes/protocols and handling of matters

Successful collaboration with stakeholders in relevant functional areas/teams across the organization
