OVERVIEW: The General Counsel is directly responsible for representing the University, providing legal services and works with outside counsel on various administrative and court proceedings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Consults with the President and Human Resources in protecting the interests of employees and the University in accordance with the University Human Resource policies, laws and regulations.

Prepares legal documents as necessary.

Prepares for and represents the University in matters before the EEOC, Office for Civil Rights (OFC), State Commission on Human Rights and litigation matters in St. Louis City and County state circuit court and in Federal court, or works directly with outside law firms in the preparation and representation of such matters

Attends and provides advice to all Board of Regents meetings.

Monitors activity regarding risk management claims, prepares, reviews and suggests changes to related documents.

Identifies legal requirements and government reporting regulations affecting the University and monitors the exposure of the University. Offers advice and counsel to administration in the preparation of the information requested or required for compliance.

Handles other legal matters as may be assigned by the President

Attend continuing legal education seminars and read legal publications, such as federal and state case law reporters and numerous other legal journals and

reports, in order to stay abreast of the voluminous and rapidly evolving law and regulatory mandates affecting the University.

Any other duties as required

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze and interpret general higher education periodicals, legal publications, legal documents or government regulations. Ability to prepare legal documents and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from leaders, employees, students and the general public.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:

J.D Degree required and at least seven to ten years of relevant full time experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES OR REGISTRATIONS:

Must be a member of the Missouri State Bar and licensed to practice in the Federal and State Courts of the State of Missouri.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The employee may occasionally stand, walk, stoop, kneel or crouch during shift. Employee will be required to regularly sit, use hand to finger, handle, feel and reach with hands and arms. Employee must be able to occasionally lift, push, pull and or move up to 25 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position works in an environment with low noise levels.

TRAVEL:

This position may travel up to 5% of the time.
