General Counsel

BlockFi’s mission is to provide liquidity, transparency and efficiency to digital financial markets by creating products that meet the needs of consumers and corporations across the globe. We build bridges between traditional finance and digital markets that enable growth for all participants.

We are looking for a General Counsel with the depth of experience to inform a vigorous approach to building a sophisticated legal strategy across all aspects of our rapidly scaling business. This position will report directly to the CEO, and will have direct lines of contact to all business units.

Responsibilities

Drive all aspects of legal strategy across the organization, including regulatory compliance, global expansion, corporate governance, intellectual property, privacy, consumer protection, and licensing

Act as legal adviser and partner across BlockFi’s departments, including but not limited to Engineering, Product Management, Growth, Finance, Compliance, and Operations

Respond to and set precedents for a wide range of legal requests across BlockFi stakeholders and internal departments

Mentor and influence the growth of our existing Legal team members and overall Legal function at BlockFi

Fully manage internal and external resources to drive optimal commercial and risk management outcomes

Qualifications

15+ years experience practicing law in both law firm and in-house settings

JD or equivalent degree

Experience as part of an in-house counsel in regulated financial services and/or mid stage startup preferred

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Ability to be proactive, working cross-functionally and collaboratively

Expertise in financial regulatory matters, specifically money transmitter and lending laws, SEC rules, and and CFTC rules governing derivatives

Experience dealing with state and federal regulators or former role at a regulatory agency

Knowledge of the cryptocurrency space a plus

Experience building and managing a team of legal professionals
