As HouseCanary’s General Counsel, you will be a trusted business partner in setting HouseCanary’s strategic direction and projects, and serve as a key member of the leadership team. As well as being a key contributor to our leadership, you will be responsible for building, managing, and leading our business-forward and results-driven Compliance and Real Estate Brokerage Operations teams, and setting the right foundations in place to support and drive HouseCanary’s continued growth. As General Counsel, you will oversee all aspects of our business including corporate, product, IP, regulatory, commercial, partnerships, litigation, policy, compliance, privacy and employment. Reporting to our CEO, this role is based in our San Francisco, CA headquarters.

What you'll do:

    • Be our trusted business partner who will help us understand when to take risks, how to mitigate them, and when to avoid them
    • Be across and support all aspects of our business and drive our legal strategy for various company-wide initiatives
    • Advise leadership on corporate governance and equity fundraising, including board meetings, stock administration, business conduct, and other policy matters
    • Draft, review and negotiate all legal documentation and negotiate legal issues across multiple aspects of the business including commercial and vendor agreements and complex partnerships
    • Manage intellectual properties and trademarks
    • Provide legal advice to the product and business teams on consumer protection laws, privacy, CCPA and data protection laws and regulations
    • Advise on company employment matters, policies, and personnel issues, including executive compensation matters, offer letters and incentive and benefit plans
    • With the support of your team, manage compliance requirements for HouseCanary’s nationwide real estate brokerage business and company-wide compliance certifications and programs, including SOC 2, ISO 27001 and privacy
    • Establish and maintain effective relationships with outside counsel, third-party vendors and partners.

What you have:

    • 12+ years of relevant legal experience, ideally gained at a well-regarded law firm followed by senior in-house experience
    • Proven experience building and leading successful teams
    • Excellent communication, organization and project management skills, and the ability to independently prioritize multiple simultaneous projects with different deadlines
    • A results-driven attitude and find enjoyment in creatively navigating novel solutions in an industry ripe for change
    • A track record for being highly accountable and driven, and relish the idea of having the opportunity to set the foundations for and directly impact the strategic direction of a fast-growing company
    • Ability to simplify complex concepts and legal terms and contracts with a focus on applying business vision and direction
    • Membership in at least one state bar (preferably California)
    • J.D. degree.
